DESCRIPTION
This is the first 14er I ever climbed, back in September 2012 with a few friends. This peak is just one of a trio (or quartet if you count Mt. Cameron) of 14ers, including Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Bross, located near the Continental Divide southwest of Breckenridge. They are often climbed together and are sometimes collectively referred to as the DeCaLiBro (DemocratCameronLincolnBross). From the east, Democrat can be seen from parts of South Park but is often hidden from view when driving along Colorado Rt. 9 between Fairplay and Breckenridge. It can also be seen from the northwest at Fremont Pass along Colorado Rt. 91, between I-70 and Leadville.
We did the entire DeCaLiBro that day in 2012, beginning at the Kite Lake trailhead (12,000'). The standard DeCaLiBro Route takes you up Mt. Democrat's East Slopes Route to the Democrat-Cameron saddle at 13,350'. From there, you ascend the ridgeline to the west-southwest to the summit of Democrat, after which you retrace your steps and descending back to the saddle. From there you continue straight up the Mt. Cameron west ridge to the Mt. Cameron summit. The full loop eventually takes you to the summits of Lincoln and Bross as well before descending down Bross' West Slopes Route back to the trailhead.
